What is Technology?

Broadly speaking, technology is how people modify the natural world to suit their own purposes. From the Greek word techne, meaning art or artifice or craft, technology literally means the act of making or crafting but more generally it refers to the diverse collection of processes and knowledge that people use to extend human abilities and to satisfy human wants and needs.

Technology is the application of tools, materials and knowledge to solve problems and extend human capabilities.

It includes machines (like computers) but also techniques and processes (like the way we produce computer chips). It might seem like all technology is only electronic, but that’s just most modern technology. In fact, a hammer and the wheel are two examples of early human technology.
