Understanding Processors

The CPU or the ‘processor’ as it is widely known is the brain of a computer. All kinds of work that are performed by a computer are controlled by this brain. It fetches instructions, executes programs, performs mathematical and logical operations, controls input/output functions, and produces end results.

The primary function of the CPU is to execute the sequence of instructions stored in the main memory. A CPU plays a crucial role in a computer system’s:

Performance: The single determinant of a computer system’s performance is the processor. Its capabilities indicate and authenticate the maximum performance of a system. A system’s efficiency is proven by its competent processor. Other computer components and devices enable the processor to reach its full potential.

Software Support: A fast processor can enable the latest software on the machine. New and speedy processors facilitate the use of specialised and current software, which were unusable on earlier slower systems.

Reliability: The reliability of a processor is determined by its quality. Other factors include age dependency and energy consumption.

Motherboard Support: The component makeup supports a PC’s capabilities and performance. The processors help in determining what kind of chipset to use. The two main brands for each set of CPU model with different architectures are Intel and AMD.
