Transmission Modes in Computer Networks
Transmission mode refers to the mechanism of transferring of data between two devices connected over a network. It is also called Communication Mode. These modes direct the direction of flow of information. There are three types of transmission modes. They are:
- Simplex Mode
- Half duplex Mode
- Full duplex Mode
1. Simplex: It is one of the data transmission mode in which data is transmitted only in one direction from sender to receive. Two way communications is not allowed. Example: Transmission of television, radio, keyboard to CPU etc.
2. Half duplex: In this transmission mode, data can be transmitted in both direction but only in one direction at a time the complete channel is used for one directional transmission. Example: Walky Talky
3. Full duplex: In this transmission mode, data is transmitted in both directions at a same time. The channel is divided into two half, one each for one direction transmission. It is similar to two way road, Example: Mobile phone, Telephone.
