The nbtstat Utility

Microsoft Windows uses an interface called Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) that is used to associate names with its workstations. The upper layer of the NetBIOS interface needs transport protocol (usually TCP/IP). The nbtstat utility is used to view the detailed information about the TCP/IP network and their protocol statistics. The following are the uses of the nbtstat utility:

  • Tracking NetBIOS over TCP/IP
  • Displaying incoming and outgoing NetBIOS interface over TCP/IP connection
  • Resolving the NetBIOS names

The nbtstat utility is only available in window-based operating system

To usethe nbtstat utility, you need to type the following nbtstat command in the Windows command line prompt:

  • nbtstat
