Smart Card Reader
A card reader is an input device which reads data stored on a cared. A smart card reader reads data from a smart card. Originally, punched card readers were used, which used cardboard punched cards. Now modem card readers can read smart cards embedded with magnetic strips, computer chip etc.
A smart card reader can be attached to the system internally or externally by USB or by a dedicated adapter. The reader provides power for the chip that is embedded in the smart card. These chips contain a combination of RAM, ROM, PROM, and a 16-bit CPU. Figure 34 shows a smart card reader.
