Hubs
The medium and the access mechanism determine the maximum segment length of a LAN. In order to overcome the length restriction, there are several solutions; the simplest being to use a repeater. A repeater is a signal amplifier used for transmitting packets, independent of the packets content. It connects two or more Ethernet segments together. A repeater also known as an extender is a device that gets a signal and amplifies it, and sends it back on its way. The reason for using a repeater is to expand the reasonable distance of a cable sprint. One could insert two lengths of a cable placing the repeater in the centre, and it would work. Both devices can operate at the Physical layer of the simplified OSI model.
