First generation computer used vacuum tube. These were large in size and writing programmes on them was difficult.

• Technology vacuum tube
• Supported machine language only
• Large space needed to store
• Very costly
• Ac needed to cool down
• Consumed lot of electricity
• slow input and output device
• Non portable
• constant maintenance required
• calculate data in millisecond

Examples: ENIAC, EDVAC, IBM-701, IBM-650
